Turn on the Drawing toolbar if it's not already on. On its left end, there should be an arrow that looks like your mouse pointer. Click on it to turn on the Select Objects pointer. Use this to draw a box around your graphic (you know, click in one corner, hold and drag to the opposite corner, then let go). Make the box much larger than the graphic; you need to enclose the object entirely to select it.
Don't forget to turn off the Select Objects pointer when you're done. Otherwise, you'll be going nuts because you can't select *text*. :)
To get the text to "snug up" to the graphic, you might want to change the wrapping options to 'Tight'. You can also use Edit Wrap Points to change where Word thinks the borders are. (Both of these are available on the Picture toolbar, under the 'Text Wrapping' button, which looks like a black dog on a background of horizontal lines.)
(This is for Word 2000. If you have a different version, you may need to adjust these instructions, especially for the wrapping options.)
